Andreas Burckhardt

Andreas Burckhardt was born on February 21st, 1936 in Basel. His parents were Felix Burckhardt (a well-known poet and writer who published his texts under the name of Blasius) and Esther Burckhardt-Schmid.

He studied literature and history at the University of Basel where he obtained his PHD in 1965. During his studies, he was member of the Fraternity Zofingia.

He then married his charming and witty wife, Anna-Maria Regazoni, before leaving for Cambridge (Massachusetts) to pursue his research at a newly founded institute of the Harvard University.

After the return to Switzerland, the family settled down in Bern where Andreas Burckhardt's four daughters were raised: Claudia Rebecca Francisca, Renata and Aurelia.

From 1971 to 1975, Andreas Burckhardt was secretary at Swiss National Research Foundation and in 1975 he became Professor at the University of Geneva for modern history.

During all his teaching years, he motivated his students to look into unusual historical aspects rather than simply following the general trend.

Even after his retirement at the age of 64, he enjoyed and cultivated the contact with the younger generations.

He was also an enthusiastic collector . His music collection was compiled by the Swiss National Sound Archives.

Andreas Burckhardt died on March 1st, 2005 in Bern after a long illness, which did however not prevent him from being creative and writing until four days before his death.
